BA in Classical Instrumental Music Performance

About the training

The objective of the bachelor programme in Classical Instrumental Music Performance is to train professionals who enrich and spread the Hungarian and European music culture with their artistic performance. With their acquired theoretical and practical knowledge, sophisticated musical taste, technique, and formative skills they will be capable of providing artistic services in orchestras, choirs, and chamber music bands. They will be capable of filling in the active cultural part in the institutions of music scene. The graduates have developed musical skills, adequate vocal and instrumental and relevant theoretical knowledge in order to continue their studies in the Masters programme. Those who do not want to continue their education the course provides a good basis to take part in the concert life as a chamber or orchestral musician or to become a soloist, a session musician or even a section leader. Those who would not like to perform instrumental activities will be able to help music bands and cultural institutions with their service that is appropriate to their specialization, in a creative way, and control them at a lower level.

Our successes achieved in recent years in higher education music competitions prove the effectiveness of the training. In 2009 the Visiting Committee, which is responsible for testing all the musical institutions of higher education led by Professor László Dobszay, summarized his opinion in the following comment: “Széchenyi István University of Győr, Varga Tibor Institute of Musical Art is a musical institution with the smallest number of pupils. Taking advantage of its benefits it can create a family atmosphere that is a transparent and verifiable education. The institution is characterized by the fact that students during a private conversation (which was held without the institution’s teachers and leaders) declared although they could have gone to another university (even to Budapest), they chose this school because of the professors’ good reputation.” Students of our institute can receive unprecedented grant support and professional jobs. Every year from the best students of the band 15 students could win the scholarship of the University Music Foundation. On average every fourth student receives a special scholarship because of his/her outstanding school achievements (e.g., a fellowship granted by the Republic, Universitas, and/or orchestral scholarship). Many of our students are employed at music schools in and around Győr. The university can place the majority of those students who apply for student accommodation in the central or outside student dormitories.
