Sustainability: world rankings confirm the achievements of Széchenyi István University

Széchenyi István University is committed to sustainability, which permeates its educational and research and development activities, as well as its cooperation with its partners. The institution's achievements in this area are confirmed by its inclusion in the sustainability rankings of both major international rating organisations - the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and the Times Higher Education (THE).

Sustainability is the greatest challenge of our time and will have a major impact on the future viability of the planet and human societies. It is no coincidence that Széchenyi István University has made achieving this goal one of its priorities. This is why our training and research portfolio places great emphasis on highly advanced technologies such as electromobility, precision farming and digitalisation. The harmonious coexistence of the institution with the environment is also supported by a number of activities, such as its conscious effort to reduce energy consumption achieved by the energy-efficient renovation of its buildings.

The importance of sustainability has also been recognised by the most prestigious international higher education ranking organisations around the world and they acknowledge the achievements of Széchenyi University. The THE Impact Rankings, which is based on the UN's contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, has been ranking Győr for several years and currently ranks it among the world's top 400 universities in the categories of "sustainable cities and communities", "decent work and economic growth" and "peace, justice and strong institutions".

According to the latest QS World Sustainability Ranking published on 5 December, Széchenyi University has also been included as the sixth best university in Hungary. Based on the same set of standards applied by companies, this ranking system analyses the institutions’ contribution to sustainability focusing on the environmental and social impacts and the quality of governance. Széchenyi University particularly excelled in the quality of governance as the 273rd best university, and also shone in ensuring environmental sustainability and equality.

"Our university endeavours to contribute to the development of advanced technologies, of our region and sustainability. These three areas are not only interlinked but also mutually reinforcing each other. For this reason, the fact that two world sustainability rankings have already recognised our performance in this field is a very important acknowledgement. For our Hungarian and international students, it is becoming increasingly important to study at a university that works for a sustainable and liveable future", said Dr. Bálint Filep, President of the University.

“Due to the efforts of recent years and the results achieved by our institution, our university has a more and more intense visibility all around the world. Today, Széchenyi István University is listed in six major world rankings of higher education, in four of which it was included for the first time this year. In addition to the two sustainability rankings, we are also included in four world rankings that predominantly focus on the quality of education and research. These include the QS world and European ranking. The latter ranks us in the top ten percent of universities in Europe, while the Times Higher Education ranking system positions us in the top five percent of universities in the world. Moreover, our institution is also among the best universities in the world in the field of engineering," summarised Dr Eszter Lukács, Vice President for International and Strategic Relations of the University.
