European University Games: a gold medal for SZE’s judo player
On the tenth day of competitions at the European University Games in Łódz, Poland, on 25 July, Richárd Sipőcz, a student of Széchenyi István University, and a judo practitioner from the University’s Sports Association, won another gold medal for the Hungarian delegation.
The young athlete competed in the +100 kg weight category and in the first round triumphed over Fabian Meyer (Technical University of Karlsruhe). Neither France's Mohamed Montassar Rouahi (Grenoble-Alpes University) in the quarter-finals, nor Ukraine's Oleksiy Halaka (Sumy State University) in the semi-finals, were able to stop the talented sportsman from Győr, who in the final also confidently defeated the home team's judo player Mariusz Krueger (Jozef Pilsudski Academy of Physical Education, Warsaw).
In recent years, Richárd Sipőcz has achieved considerable success in junior competitions and is a two-time European Cadet, Under 23 and European Junior Champion. He has now proved himself several times at the adult level and his main goal is to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
