Győr University Ice Sports Centre: Győr Ice Arena Named After SZE

As of now the city's ice arena will be known as the Győr University Ice Sports Centre, symbolising the strong connection between ice hockey and SZE. The new signage will be installed on the facade of the facility in the coming days, which serves as a venue for ice dance, curling, and ice skating, including school and public skating.

Széchenyi István University has been actively involved in Győr's ice hockey scene since 2021. Its adult team, UNI GYŐR ETO HC, has shown remarkable progress at both national and international levels. In its debut season, the team made an immediate impact by securing a bronze medal in Hungary’s second-tier Andersen League, alongside a silver medal in the Hungarian University-College National Championships.

The 2023/24 season proved even more successful, with the team claiming championship titles in both competitions. Additionally, they entered the EUHL (European University Hockey League), a Slovakia-based international university league, where they narrowly missed out on the playoffs in the regular season.

The 2024/25 season brought historic success, as the green-and-whites advanced to the third round of the Hungarian Cup, finishing as the highest-ranked non-top-division team. Currently, the Győr-based team has reached the semi-finals in both the domestic Andersen League and the international EUHL playoffs.

The University’s ice hockey team is achieving success both nationally and internationally

Széchenyi István University and the Győri ETO HC sports club, which also operates the ice arena, are elevating their collaboration to a new level: the arena, which hosts the team’s home matches as well as a wide range of ice sports—including ice dancing, curling, and skating—will be named the Győr University Ice Sports Centre from now on.

As the previous naming rights agreement has expired, the former signage was removed from the facade in recent days, and the new name along with the University’s logo will soon be installed. The facility is also organising an increasing number of programmes for students. In addition to learning the basics of winter sports, they can enjoy a fun and lively experience at the event called “FroSZEn”.

The new name of the arena is already visible in the visual design, and soon, the “Győr University Ice Sports Centre” sign will welcome visitors arriving to take part in sports

Széchenyi István University is strongly committed to supporting sports and offers a dual career model for athletes, enabling them to continue their studies and prepare for civilian life alongside their professional careers. Ice hockey is one of the world’s most renowned sports and is becoming increasingly popular at a university level in our region. Our institution takes great pride in the successes achieved together and in the fact that more than ten players from the team are our students. The arena is also a favoured venue for recreational sports and sporting events for people with disabilities. It is a place to which generations of Győr residents feel connected and provides an excellent opportunity for both our domestic and international students to engage in sports," stated Dr Tamás Gyömörei, President of the University’s Sports and Recreation Centre.

Under its new name, Győr University Ice Sports Centre, the facility will host a major event on 18 April at 7:00 p.m.—an international match between Hungary and Norway.
