Brief description of the programme:
There is an increasing need for professionals in health preservation and development, as well as in prevention and rehabilitation, who can address the prevention and treatment of physical illnesses and related mental health issues from a health-centred perspective. The Health Psychology MA program will represent progress in professional training by incorporating new specialized subjects into the curriculum, allowing for a deeper exploration of these topics.
Structure of studies
The course is theory-oriented and includes practical work as well. The disciplines and specializations leading to the qualification from which the degree is built:
- Health Management Studies (project planning, presentation skills development)
- Theoretical and Clinical Medical Sciences (genetics, behavioural addiction studies, neuroanatomy, psychopharmacology)
- Applied Health Sciences (public health, health law, statistics, research methodology, health and sports psychology, dietetics)
- Applied Psychological Sciences (developmental and personality psychology, cognitive psychology, social psychology, career socialization, psychological assessment, and psychotherapy)
- 10 weeks of practical training in parallel with the program.
Language requirements
TOEFL 513 / IELTS 5.5 /oral examination, TOEFL IBT test score of 66 or any standardised international English language exam corresponding with Hungarian B2 at the Bachelors level and C1 at Masters level.
If there is no standardised English exam, the University relies on an online interview. Applicants not complying with language requirements must enrol in a preparatory language programme. After having completed the language course and passed the requisite final examination, if there are no professional reservations on the part of the Faculty, admission to the selected Bachelor's programme is automatic.
Academic requirements
Completed and signed application form, copy of your passport, notarized copy of Bachelor’s degree relevant to the Master's studies, notarized copy of the Transcript of Records, notarized copy of your language certificate, recent photograph, Curriculum Vitae (resumé) in English, Academic Reference letter in English (Issued by your former academic institution/teacher).
A certified copy of a Psychology BA or BSc degree from any higher education institution, and an English-language motivation letter (minimum 1000, maximum 2000 characters) must be added to the application. Certified copy of your English language proficiency (certificate), recent photograph, Curriculum Vitae (resumé) in English.
Programme educational objectives:
In the framework of the Health Psychology master’s program, professionals with a background in psychology have the opportunity to acquire new skills by expanding their knowledge with comprehensive healthcare expertise. Students have the opportunity to continue their studies in doctoral programs.
PEO#1: The aim of this program is to prepare health psychologists who, through acquiring relevant knowledge in health and psychological sciences, as well as the necessary methodological and practical skills
PEO#2: Students are equipped to perform tasks in mental health promotion and health rehabilitation
PEO#3: Graduates will be able to improve the mental and physical well-being of the public, provide psychological support to address harmful health behaviour, and offer psychological supervision, support, and consultation to other professionals in the field.
PEO#4: Students will also be able to apply their skills in settings where legislation, guidelines, and protocols permit.
Student Outcomes:
Our program's student outcomes (SOs) represent the skills, knowledge, and behaviours our curriculum aims to impart to our students. The Health Psychology MA program defines seven SOs (1) to (7) to guide student development as follows:
1. With knowledge of the field’s terminology, they can accurately understand and apply concepts used in personality development, which they can later utilize in their work.
2. They will be capable of identifying professional problems, conducting psychological assessments, forming psychological opinions, performing crisis interventions, applying cognitive-behavioural therapy techniques, and establishing supportive relationships.
3. Students will develop a responsible, respectful, and empathetic attitude, as the program emphasizes respecting client autonomy and treating collaboration as a partnership. Alongside theoretical knowledge, there is also a focus on developing practical skills, which help to foster and strengthen these attitudes.
4. By becoming familiar with professional ethical guidelines and the importance of confidentiality, they will be able to create a safe and supportive environment for clients.
5. They will be able to synthesize national and international professional guidelines, scientific knowledge, professional practices, and experience, enhancing integrative thinking and decision-making skills.
6. They will be capable of making independent decisions, including resolving interventions based on needs
assessment, representing professional views, and engaging in continuous self-development. This will strengthen their autonomy and responsibility and increase their confidence and commitment to the
profession.
7. By embracing health psychology's distinctive interdisciplinary nature and making it a part of their professional identity, they will be open and collaborative with representatives of other professions and will respect professional perspectives that differ from their own.
Job opportunities:
After completing the programme, students will be able to work in various settings to improve the individual's mental health and also address those psychological factors which impact health in general. The career opportunities for health psychologists are multiple: they can work in hospitals and outpatient clinics, provide psychological assessments in research setting or psychiatric establishments, interventions and support for patients with chronic illnesses. They may also pursue an academic career by conducting research on the psychological aspects of health and illness. It is also a possibility for them to participate in health promotion, sports and exercise settings, develop programs and strategies the level of primary, secondary and also tertiary intervention.
