M-Club Renewed, Post Palace Repurposed – New Milestone for SZE in Mosonmagyaróvár

Széchenyi István University has reached another significant stage in the remarkable development of its Mosonmagyaróvár campus over the past decade: the complete renovation of the M-Club and its surroundings will soon begin, and advanced negotiations are underway with Magyar Posta Zrt. for the acquisition of the Mosonmagyaróvár Post Palace. This is the result of ten years of deliberate growth and strategic development, the foundation of which was laid by the integration of the institution and the Albert Kázmér Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences in 2016 – a process whose preparations began as early as 2015.

Dr István Nagy, Member of Parliament, has played a key role in the successes achieved since, having supported the formation of a strong partnership between Széchenyi University and the faculty from the outset. The strategic decisions made over the past ten years have been consistently supported by the Hungarian government, enabling the strengthening of one of the region’s most dynamically developing knowledge centres.

The intellectual and infrastructural renewal of the faculty has produced tangible results. The comprehensive reconstruction of Óvár Castle and its surroundings has created a worthy home for the institution, which has since become a genuine academic hub. The expansion of educational and research activities is reflected in the establishment of new departments (Department of Applied Sustainability, Department of Regional Science and Rural Development, Department of Systems Science, Department of Biosystems and Food Engineering), each opening new dimensions in disciplines that will shape the future of society.

Meanwhile, the faculty’s academic community has expanded with renowned experts and professors, and internal succession has also significantly strengthened. This has led to a qualitative leap forward: since 2016, the number of teaching and research staff has grown by one third – the number of researchers having increased more than fivefold – approaching 150 in total.

As a result, the number of first-choice applicants to the faculty has nearly doubled, and the number of admitted students has also broken records year after year. The current student population is now 25 percent higher than nine years ago, exceeding 1,000.

To support further development, Széchenyi István University plans to implement two additional key developments in the near future. As part of the continued renewal of the Mosonmagyaróvár campus, the reconstruction of the nearby M-Club and its surroundings will soon commence. This HUF 375 million investment is expected to be completed by autumn. The building, designed to harmonise with the castle, will function as an atmospheric community space, offering a buffet, café, terrace, and areas for educational and workshop activities.

In addition, the University is engaged in advanced negotiations with Magyar Posta Zrt. regarding the purchase of the former Mosonmagyaróvár Post Palace. The institution is examining which strategic focus area the more than one-hundred-year-old, historicist-style building could serve as a public facility in the future, thereby strengthening both the city and the region. A final agreement may be reached by autumn.

"The integration of the Mosonmagyaróvár faculty and Széchenyi István University was a strategic decision that is shaping the future of the entire region. It is a joy to see the institution continuously expanding, introducing new fields of study, and offering real answers to the challenges of rural areas, agriculture, and sustainability. The developments now underway are further examples of the University being a driving force for the city’s and the region’s development," said Dr István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament.

"Széchenyi István University offers unparalleled opportunities through the synergy between its Mosonmagyaróvár campus and its Győr campus, located in the county seat. By strengthening education, research, and innovation through an integrated approach, our institution is becoming an increasingly significant player on the international stage," said Dr Bálint Filep, President of Széchenyi István University.
