Brief description of the programme:
The art of design is the common language of human desires, needs and stories. The art of design does not merely blur the boundaries between genres, but creates a new overall artistic phenomenon that unites research and art, action and contemplation, planning and construction. The art of design is an interpretative framework for theory and practice, poesis and technology, vision and realisation. The aim of our programme is to use architecture to present the art of design as the art of the 21st century.
Structure of studies:
The total number of credits needed to complete the MSc in Architectural Design programme is 120 credits. The courses of the programme are divided into the following categories:
Compulsory courses (Core Modules and Design Studios): These include Complex Project Planning, Design Specialisation, Sustainable Architecture, Urbanism, Heritage Protection, and Research Methodology.
Elective courses in professional knowledge: These cover areas such as Architectural Technologies, Innovation and Visual Communication, Climate-Conscious Design, Acoustics, and Artistic Studies.
Elective courses in additional disciplines: These include topics in Humanities and Social Sciences, Economics and Law, and Natural Sciences, allowing students to develop interdisciplinary expertise.
Language requirements:
- TOEFL 513 / IELTS 5.5 /oral examination, TOEFL IBT test score of 66 (issued in the last two years)
- Certificate of any standardised international English language exam corresponding with Hungarian B2 at the Bachelors level and C1 at Master’s level issued by an accredited language centre/ academic institution.
- In case the student has completed his/her previous level of studies in English, proof can be uploaded about the fact that the language of instruction was English, issued by the institution.
- If the uploaded document(s) do(es) not meet the above-mentioned requirements, the University relies on an online language interview.
Professional requirements:
Master studies: Bachelor’s degree relevant* for the Master studies. Transcript of records of Bachelor studies.
Please kindly note that, in order to fulfil the formal requirements, academic document need to be submitted in notarised form.
Applicants are required to upload a portfolio showcasing the results of their studies in architectural design, architectural engineering, or one of the undergraduate programmes listed below, as well as any experience gained in a design studio.
The accepted undergraduate programmes and prior studies, at a level equivalent to university undergraduate education, are:

Programme Educational Objectives:
The Architectural Design MA programme at Széchenyi István University is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for successful careers in the field of architecture and interior design. Our programme educational objectives (PEOs) are as follows:
PEO#1: Graduates will excel in developing effective solutions to the challenges of architecture, architectural design and interior design.
PEO#2: Students will demonstrate proficient communication and competency in high-level architectural areas, whether in practice or through advanced studies.
PEO#3: Graduates will conduct themselves ethically, contribute to societal well-being through their projects and advance professionally in their careers.
PEO#4: Students will stay updated with the changes of contemporary architecture and interior design, participate in lifelong learning and gain their licence as a member of the Chamber of Hungarian Architects.
Student Outcomes:
The student outcomes (SOs) of our programme represent the skills, knowledge and behaviours that our curriculum aims to impart to our students. The Architectural Design MA programme defines seven SOs (1) to (7) to guide student development as follows:
- Ability to identify, formulate and solve complex architectural, interior design and interior decoration problems by applying the principles of architecture, detailing, building design, art history and architectural criticism.
- An ability to apply architectural and interior design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of personal wellbeing, public health, safety and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, urban, environmental and economic factors.
- The ability to communicate effectively with audiences in a variety of representational settings - e.g. public speaking, press, media.
- An ability to recognise ethical and professional responsibilities in architectural situations and to make informed decisions, which must consider the impact of architectural and interior design solutions in global, local, economic, environmental, urban and societal contexts.
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks and meet objectives.
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyse and interpret data and use architectural and interior design judgment to draw conclusions
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Job Opportunities:
The skills acquired can help the graduates in a wide range of areas: in addition to traditional architectural and interior design, urban design, development and construction tasks, today's architects are increasingly involved in project management, business and economic activities, facilities management, professional support for public administration and managing relations with people, urban and rural communities and the environment. Graduates in architectural design are qualified to carry out construction, management, contracting and administrative tasks and to work independently on various fields of architecture. The diploma obtained is recognised as equivalent in the European Union.
