Language requirements

TOEFL 513 / IELTS 5.5 /oral examination, TOEFL IBT test score of 66 or any standardised international English language exam corresponding with Hungarian B2 at the Bachelors level and C1 at Masters level.

If there is no standardised English exam, the University relies on an online interview. Applicants not complying with language requirements must enrol in a preparatory language programme. After having completed the language course and passed the requisite final examination, if there are no professional reservations on the part of the Faculty, admission to the selected Bachelor's programme is automatic.


Academic requirements

Personal interview, Conducting audition (with repetiteur and orchestra), general music knowledge and piano skills test. 

A certified copy of a BA degree in music from a higher education institution:

- Orchestral/Choral Conducting, with full credit accepted,

 - or in other specialisations of the Bachelor of Music (by completing specified credits). 

Notarized copy of the Transcript of Records.

Completed and signed application form, copy of passport. notarized copy of language certificate, recent photograph, Curriculum Vitae (resumé) in English, Motivational Letter in English.


Programme Educational Objectives:

The MA in Conducting programme’s Orchestra Conductor Specialization at Széchenyi István University is designed to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for successful careers in the field of orchestral conducting. The programme’s educational objectives are as follows:

PEO#1: The aim of MA in Conducting course is to train conductors who, with the appropriate musical training, are able to serve and disseminate universal and Hungarian musical culture, especially in the field of orchestral culture. The orchestral conducting specialisation focuses primarily on the symphonic and operatic repertoire and its practical application (including the symphonic works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Brahms, Dohnányi, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Bruckner, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, Stravinsky, Ligeti, operas of Mozart, Verdi, Puccini etc.).

PEO#2: The MA in Conducting programme aims to develop the skills, theoretical and practical knowledge essential for the artistic direction of different types of orchestras, based on knowledge of the various genres of classical and contemporary music. 

PEO#3: Orchestra conductors are able to apply their highly developed communicational and advanced instrumental skills to rehearse and perform symphonic and oratorio works, as well as operas and musical theatre shows, and to play a proactive role in various musical institutions. The Orchestra Conductor specialization programme is supported by a number of professional orchestras and theatres, which, as partners of Széchenyi University, provide regular practical training for our conductor students.

PEO#4: Graduated conductors are ready to continue their studies at doctoral level.

Student Outcomes:

  1. The orchestral conductor possesses an in-depth understanding of the musical knowledge and technical toolkit necessary for orchestral conducting.
  2. He/she has extensive general and specialized knowledge regarding orchestral works, encompassing various styles, genres, and their respective performance practices.

 

  1. The orchestra conductor is able to conduct orchestral works of different styles, genres and performance apparatus, both in podium situations and in studio or other settings, with confidence, asserting his/her own artistic vision, with taste, visual power and experience.
  2. He/she is able to appropriately select from the conducting techniques acquired.
  3. He/she approaches his/her own conducting, rehearsal leadership, and others’ instrumental performance, as well as various performance practices and specific musical productions, with a well-developed critical sense.
  4. The professional commitment, artistic character and orientation are clearly established. 
  5. The conductor’s individual performance is in line with the quality standards of the field.

Job Opportunities:

With the acquired knowledge, the graduated conductor is well-prepared to succeed in international competitions and auditions, as well as in symphonic, oratorio, and opera concerts, setting out on the path to build a successful career. The diploma obtained is recognised as equivalent in the European Union.
