Who is the programme aimed at?
The Master of Design is offered to students who want to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to practice design professionally. During the 4 semester training, our students are introduced to the different methods of design thinking as well as to a variety of related disciplines. We offer both practical and theoretical knowledge that enable them to became a fully autonomous and responsible designer. Our students participate in complex design processes, meet different elements, methods and tools of creation, learn to cooperate in team and individually, understand the processes of decision making as well as critical thinking and environmentally sensitive attitude. The social and ethical aspects, marketing and user experiences are integrated into the practical training. We believe that multidisciplinary approach, critical thinking and empathy are necessary for a designer to react in an innovative way to the upcoming problems of the 21th century.
Structure of studies
The total number of credits needed to complete the programme is 120 credits. The courses of the programme are divided into the following categories: compulsory courses (Design Studios and Design Theory), elective courses in professional knowledge (Visualisation, Product Design Construction and Engineering, Environmental Design, Creative Skills Development, Arts and Culture, Structural Design) and elective courses in additional disciplines (Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Economics and Law). With the chosen specialisation students receive a basic subject package and are free to structure their own curricula according to their interests. 1 credit equals one ECTS credit, and 1 credit is defined as 25 student working hours.
Language requirements
TOEFL 513 / IELTS 5.5 /oral examination, TOEFL IBT test score of 66 or any standardised international English language exam corresponding with Hungarian B2 at the Bachelors level and C1 at Masters level.
If there is no standardised English exam, the University relies on an online interview. Applicants not complying with language requirements must enrol in a preparatory language programme. After having completed the language course and passed the requisite final examination, if there are no professional reservations on the part of the Faculty, admission to the selected Bachelor's programme is automatic.

*An authorized copy of a BA and BSc degree from any higher education institution already completed, that is relevant to your application, relevant professional practice, professional portfolio with design works or concepts.
Programme educational objectives:
The Design MA programme at Széchenyi István University is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for successful careers in the field of product design. Our programme educational objectives (PEOs) are as follows:
PEO#1: Graduates will excel in developing progressive, innovative, socially, environmentally sensitive effective solutions to product design challenges in international context.
PEO#2: Students will demonstrate proficient communication and competency in product design areas and in the creative industrial sector in line with international standards.
PEO#3: Graduates will conduct themselves ethically, contribute to the well-being of society, the sustainability of environment and economy, and advance in their careers.
PEO#4: Students will stay updated with contemporary changes, engage in lifelong learning.
Student Outcomes:
The student outcomes (SOs) of our programme represent the skills, knowledge and behaviours that our curriculum aims to impart to our students. The Design MA programme defines the following SOs:
SO#1: An ability to have a broad and systematic knowledge of the contemporary social, economic, market, environmental and information technology contexts related to design, how they work, and how they relate to the design profession.
SO#2: An ability to have specialised knowledge of design research methodology, data and resource collection, management, selection and evaluation methods in the field of design.
SO#3: An ability to proficiently in complex holistic thinking and has a high level of knowledge of specialised idea and concept development and innovation methods.
SO#4: An ability to actively seeking new professional knowledge, methods and techniques, and keeps abreast of developments in contemporary design, as well as artistic, social, economic, market, ecological and information-technological trends.
SO#5: An ability to be familiar with interdisciplinary design and creation methodologies, knows andmunderstands the interrelationships and systems of complex design processes and how these aremrealised in their own design work. Working in a team, they collaborate as equal partners with othermfields and disciplines. They actively seek cooperation with other disciplines and artistic fields, activelyminitiates interdisciplinary projects and takes an integrative approach to their professional activities.
SO#6: An ability to independently research complex problems, conduct complex research into art and design, critically analyse data and sources, and systematically interpret wider contextual contexts and processes. The ability to assess their own professional activities, strengths and weaknesses, and to continuously update and develop their knowledge, competences and design practice. An ability to initiate, lead and shape design research and development projects. As a member of the design professional community, takes responsibility for their community, the values and ethical standards of their field.
SO#7: An ability for motivated and committed professional work, characterised by intellectual freedom, experimentation and entrepreneurship. The professional design activities are characterised by a high value of quality and value orientation, sensitivity and intellectual approach. An ability to apply ethical and legal standards in the field of design and use their knowledge in different legal contexts in accordance with professional expectations. An ability to actively seeking cooperation with professionals from different disciplines and artistic fields, actively initiates interdisciplinary projects, and carries out its professional activities with an integrative approach.
Job opportunities:
The skills acquired can help the graduates in a wide range of areas: in addition to traditional product design (both in the industrial and artisan sector), today's designers are increasingly involved in communication and project management, business and economic activities, professional support for public administration and managing relations with people, communities and the environment. Graduates in product design are qualified to product developing, maintenance and management, and to work independently on design or artistic projects. The diploma obtained is recognised as equivalent in the European Union.
