Sustainability and Digitalisation: Future Professionals Graduate from SZE in Mosonmagyaróvár

At the graduation ceremony of the Albert Kázmér Faculty of Mosonmagyaróvár of Széchenyi István University, graduates of programmes that were the first of their kind in Hungary were also honoured. These include the ESG – Environmental, Social, and Governance Specialist and the Precision Livestock and Management Engineering. Among other achievements, the University recently received the Award for Digitalisation of Agribusiness in recognition of its future-oriented programmes and pioneering research activities.

The Albert Kázmér Faculty of Mosonmagyaróvár of Széchenyi István University has a unique tradition in Hungarian higher education, having opened its doors 207 years ago as the first agricultural institute of higher education in Europe. The University focuses on sustainability and cutting-edge technologies. Accordingly, the teaching and research activities of the Faculty are characterised by buzzwords such as modern food technologies, precision farming and agri-digitalisation. As Dr Tamás Tóth, Dean of the Faculty, said at the graduation ceremony on 7 February, the Faculty sees it as an important task to help the sector to adapt to changing circumstances, to mainstream ESG considerations, to mitigate the effects of climate change and to support these goals with state-of-the-art technologies.

"In line with the demands of the modern age, we have recently launched a number of new training courses, several of them national firsts. These include Hungarian-taught programmes like the 'ESG - Environmental, Social and Governance Specialist' or Precision Livestock and Management Engineering programmes,” he said. Among the specialised, Hungarian-taught postgraduate programmes set up in recent years, he mentioned the Precision Agricultural Engineer, the Drone Operations and Data Analysis Specialist Engineer and the Agri-Digitalisation Specialist Engineer, while among the programmes offering micro-certificates, the Agri-Geoinformatics and Agri-Digitalisation Specialist and the Specialist Adviser for the Digital Transition of Agricultural Enterprises. "Among other things, this is the reason why the Hungarian Precision Farming Association recognised the University with the Award for Digitalisation of Agribusiness at the 10th PREGA Conference in recognition of its pioneering and outstanding educational and research activities in this field, as well as its work in preparing and educating farmers in the Carpathian Basin," said the Dean, sharing the success of the project.

At the ceremony, Dr István Nagy, Minister of Agriculture, invited the newest generation of professionals to collaborate in shaping the future of the sector. “In the past two hundred years, one fundamental truth has remained unchanged—the very reason our predecessors established this academy: success in agriculture requires scientific knowledge. This is especially true today, as we face an increasing number of challenges,” he emphasised. He also highlighted that while the graduates are embarking on a new chapter in their lives, they are not alone on the road ahead, as they are part of a large and close-knit family—the community of agricultural professionals in Mosonmagyaróvár. “I wish you great success, as your achievements will strengthen Hungarian agriculture. I am confident that the knowledge you have gained at Széchenyi István University provides a solid foundation on which you can build with confidence,” the Minister underlined. Dr Nagy also noted that while 30 tenders were available last year to support the renewal of the sector, this number has increased to 40 in 2025. He further pointed out that by 2027, HUF 5,300 billion will be allocated for the development of Hungary’s agriculture and food industry, with HUF 2,900 billion dedicated to investments.

Mayor Miklós Szabó congratulated the graduates on behalf of the city. He said that Mosonmagyaróvár became a second home for the students during their university years, and the city welcomed them. As a sign of this, they were also welcomed as honorary citizens at the ceremony. "For me, a citizen is someone who takes responsibility for and does something for his or her immediate and wider environment. Keep this in mind and get involved in the public life of the city, the country and the world. But wherever life throws you, Mosonmagyaróvár and your alma mater will always be your home a little bit," he said.

Zsolt Kovács-Csomor, President of the Association of Óvár Farmers, on behalf of the farming community, and Attila Tatai, President of the Faculty Student Union, on behalf of the fellow students, congratulated the diploma winners. On behalf of the almost 100 graduating students, Trisztán Kopácsi said farewell. After the oath taking and the diploma handover, the award ceremony followed. Based on the unanimous opinion of the students, Dr Erika Lencsés-Varga, Associate Professor at the Department of Animal Science, was awarded the “Teachers for the Students” prize. The Student Pro Auditoribus award was presented to Alexandra Bakcsi, Tamara Kiss, Mátyás László, and Zsolt Schott. The bronze certificate of the recognition was awarded to Gergő Horváth.
