SZE Leads in Sustainability According to Latest Times Higher Education Rankings
For the sixth consecutive year, Széchenyi István University has been included in the Times Higher Education (THE) international sustainability rankings. This year, the institution significantly improved its position, advancing to the 401–600 bracket.
The 2025 edition of the THE Impact Rankings, one of the most prestigious university rankings globally, has been released. This list evaluates approximately 2,000 universities from over 100 countries based on their contribution to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Unlike traditional rankings, the Impact Rankings prioritise social impact over academic publications. It assesses how universities address global challenges such as urban development, justice, education, and environmental sustainability.
Despite increasing competition and the growing number of participating institutions, Széchenyi István University has maintained a consistent presence in the rankings since 2020. This year, SZE improved significantly from last year’s 601–800 range to the 401–600 range. The top three positions in the ranking are held by Western Sydney University (Australia), the University of Manchester (United Kingdom), and Kyungpook National University (South Korea).
The University of Győr performed particularly well in three SDG-related subcategories. It maintained its position among the world’s top 200 universities in the “Sustainable Cities and Communities” category, and ranked in the top 300 for both the “Peace, Justice and Strong and “Partnerships for the Goals” categories.

“Our outstanding result in the rankings confirms the significant social impact of our University and reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility. It is of utmost importance to us that our research and the education of our students are conducted with a mindset that is sensitive to global challenges and contributes to shaping a liveable future. Our goal is to engage even more deeply in creating social and environmental value, both locally and globally,” stated Dr Eszter Lukács, Vice-President for International Affairs and Strategic Relations of the University.
Széchenyi István University is also featured in four additional THE rankings: in the World University Rankings in the 1501+ range, in the Young University Rankings and Interdisciplinary Science Rankings in the 501–600 range, and in the Subject Rankings in the 601–800 range for Business and Economics and the 1251+ range for Engineering and Technology.
