SZE Presents Development of the MedTech Health Technology Campus

The MedTech Health Technology Campus of Széchenyi István University supports education, research, and even elderly care in the region, and the institution places considerable emphasis on its development. Currently, investments in the second phase are already underway.

In recent days, Széchenyi István University held a comprehensive professional presentation on the developments already implemented and those planned at its MedTech Health Technology Campus in Zrínyi utca in Győr. In addition to staff members, representatives of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital, ETO FC, the Győr Unified Health and Social Institution (EESZI), and the Szent-Györgyi Albert Health and Social Technical and Vocational Training School attended the event, along with Dr Dávid Fekete, Ministerial Commissioner responsible for the liveability and development of Győr and its region, and Szabolcs Szeles, the city councillor responsible for sport and university relations.

The 2.7-hectare site constitutes a defining complex in Győr, under local protection and partially subject to enhanced heritage protection. It previously served as a hospital site and was transferred to the university in 2021 under the asset transfer law. At the event, Dr Bálint Filep, President of the institution, stated that the University—working closely with its partners—aims to establish functions in the area that will provide significant added value to the region. He emphasised that one of the key elements of the development is interdisciplinarity, enabling the coordinated integration of health and sports sciences with engineering and technological fields.

Sarolta Horváthné Dr Szabó, Strategic Director of the University, Nóra Mészáros, Director of the Directorate of Projects, Dr Angéla Somogyi, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences, Gergely Ekler, Managing Director of Uni-Medicampus Ltd. (owned by the University), and Róbert Kányai, Director of EESZI, who participates in the development as a cooperating partner, presented the development concept and results achieved so far in detail. The presentation revealed that the University’s role in healthcare has undergone significant development in recent years: education, research and development, and services now form an integrated system, contributing substantially to strengthening healthcare provision in Győr and the surrounding region. The campus on Zrínyi Street plays a major role in this. In its first phase, completed last year as an investment of nearly one billion forints, Building Q was constructed, housing complex healthcare services: occupational health services, primary and specialist care, psychological counselling, the country’s first rural Pető Point providing conductive pedagogical services, as well as research laboratories.

In the currently ongoing second phase, construction of Buildings S, A, and B began last autumn and is expected to be completed by early 2027. The new facilities will accommodate departments of the Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences, demonstration spaces, and laboratories supporting research, while also providing modern conditions for launching new programmes.

Plans for the third phase include the establishment of a modern elderly care home with a capacity of 140–150 places, innovatively integrating healthcare services, research, and social care. In the fourth phase, the renovation of a listed building to serve as a conference and community space, as well as the creation of a comprehensive sports and health diagnostics centre, may be realised.

The presentation also placed special emphasis on the strategic cooperation between the university and the Petz Hospital. Dr Balázs Villányi, Medical Director of the hospital and Head of the university’s MedTech and Sport Competence Centre, explained that in recent years numerous developments have been achieved through the joint work of researchers and physicians from the two institutions, including a telerehabilitation platform, an acute vertigo diagnostic device, and an oral surgery prosthesis. He highlighted that one of the most important outcomes of the partnership is the Da Vinci surgical robot, with which several hundred operations have been performed since 2024. He added that the technology not only supports faster patient recovery but also contributes to retaining and attracting doctors to Győr, while the AI-based processing of 3D recordings made during surgeries may help predict complications in the future.
