SZE Strengthens its Place in Times Higher Education World Ranking
After its debut last year, Széchenyi István University has again been included in the Times Higher Education World Ranking. This means that it remains in the top five percent of universities in the world.
The Times Higher Education (THE) is one of the most renowned and global university rankings closely followed by students. On 9 October, the organisation published this year’s world rankings, where, for the second time in its history, Széchenyi István University was featured. The prestige of the list is demonstrated by the fact that the top three spots are occupied by the University of Oxford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University.
Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer of THE, expressed his delight that, while five years ago only five Hungarian institutions were included, this time there are 11, with four additional ones aiming for inclusion, currently holding “reporter status”. "Over the last year, Hungary has also been attracting more international scholars to its universities and collaborating on more international research projects, which bodes well for future success." he emphasised.
Dr Eszter Lukács, Vice-President for International Affairs and Strategic Relations at Széchenyi István University, explained that the uniqueness of THE’s global ranking lies in its strong research focus and its use of 17 separate performance indicators, following the strictest standards. According to the extensive data, Széchenyi University scored highest for its favourable staff-to student ratio, its research funding and income generation, and the proportion of international students relative to Hungarian students. The most significant positive change compared to the previous year, however, was seen in the categories of Research Excellence and Patents.
"We are proud that our University not only appears on THE’s World Rankings but also on the Young University Rankings, the Impact Ranking, and the subject rankings in the Engineering category," Dr Eszter Lukács emphasised.
