The Centre of Languages and Culture of Széchenyi István University expands its services

Businesses and individuals can now turn to the Centre of Languages and Culture of Széchenyi István University, which now offers external translation, proofreading and interpreting services. In addition to professional language services, the institution's language department is also planning to offer camps for schoolchildren, adult education and exam preparation.

Excellent language skills are today essential in both academic life and the job market. The staff of the Széchenyi University Language Centre are there to help, with a mission to improve students' general and specialist language skills. In addition to teaching, these professionals, who have a wide range of knowledge, are excellent translators, regularly proofread publications and often assist the university staff as interpreters. As part of the outreach to the market, the Centre is making its services available to businesses and individuals from 2024.

"We currently have around 20 colleagues working on language teaching and outsourcing services at the centre. The latter are mainly offered in English and German, but we also teach Spanish, French, Italian and periodically Chinese on campus. With additional services such as translation, proofreading and interpreting, we would like to open up to companies and we are also happy toreceive individual enquiries," said Adél Kiviharju-Turi, Head of the Centre of Languages and Culture at Széchenyi University.

As well as providing professional services to businesses and individuals, they also want to reach primary school pupils, and from the beginning of the summer they will be offering language camps for children in upper secondary school who want to improve their English. "The Teens Camp will be a day camp, with playful activities and a fun atmosphere, where students will spend four language lessons a day. Our own tutors will teach the morning classes, and during the breaks the participants will have the opportunity to get to know the university through various activities," said Adél Kiviharju-Turi.

The Centre of Languages and Culture is also looking to develop in adult education, with plans to offer 'micro-courses' for people who already have English language skills, to prepare them for advanced level final exams or international language exams. The head of the centre added: "There are many English courses in Győr, but few of them prepare students for the international language exams that are often required for studying abroad, such as IELTS or Cambridge Language Exams. Our native teachers are aware of the requirements, and with their help we can put together a programme that is really useful for the students".
