The Polish National Ballet's performance in Győr promises a special cultural experience

Tickets are now on sale for the Polish National Ballet's one-act ballet production of "Husband and Wife", based on the comedy by Aleksander Fredro. Choreographed by Anna Hop to music from the 1950s, the ballet will bring to life an amusing, bittersweet, piquant story full of unexpected twists and turns on the stage of the Győr National Theatre on Sunday 9 October at 7pm.

The project is part of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute's "44 x Mickiewicz" programme. Its aim is to emphasise Poland's contribution to European culture, to reactivate Romantic ideas and to draw attention to the unique elements of Polish Romanticism.

The characters in the play are out of control, hysterically funny, miserable, and sometimes just plain cruel. In other words, it is us, anytime, anywhere, looking in a distorting mirror. Anna Hop offers choreography that is perhaps the most adventurous piece by Polish romantic writer Aleksander Fredro. Husband and Wife explores Elwira's dangerous affairs, as well as the intricate relationships between husband Waclaw, his mistress, Alfred and the couple's maid Justysia.

Anna Hop has set the story in a 1950s summer resort, drawing us into the unexpected twists and turns of the sweet foursome's fun to the music of Stanislaw Moniuszko, 1950s hits and contemporary tunes. Her aim is to introduce the audience to a bittersweet story of a midlife crisis, jealousy, love and unfulfilled ambition, with an explosive ending that will surprise everyone.

The choreography is brilliantly complemented by minimalist sets and contrasting lighting by Malgorzata Szablowska.
