The team of SZE promoted to the First Division of Men's Handball National Championship as champions

The men's handball team of Széchenyi István University, Győri ETO-UNI FKC, won their last home match in the second half and were promoted to the first division as champions after winning the Hungarian second division championship. The team members deservedly received their gold medals and the trophy after the match.

Sport is of paramount importance to Széchenyi István University, and this is reflected in a growing number of great results. The latest example of this is men's handball, where our institution's team has performed superbly throughout the season, winning the Hungarian second division NB I/B after winning the university championship and earning the right to play in the first division, the K&H League, next year. Next season, they will face world-class teams such as regular Champions League participants Telekom Veszprém and Pick Szeged.

In their last home game of the season, Győr hosted third-placed Szigetszentmiklós and won 30:21 thanks mainly to its excellent performance in the second half. With only one away match remaining in the championship, the title has already been secured thanks to a seven-point lead. After the final whistle was blown, there was a jubilant celebration as the players received their gold medals and trophies.

"At the beginning of the season, we had a clear ambition to get promoted. We didn't say we wanted to do it as champions, but I'm very happy that we managed to do so. Success consists of several components. On the one hand, the relationship between the players and the professional staff was very close and we were always able to correct mistakes immediately. On the other hand, we were very attentive to the human factor, we did our best to make sure that the boys only had to concentrate on the game. In addition, the support of Széchenyi István University and the calm background it provided were extremely important. Many of our players are students of the university, which not only helps them with their accommodation, but also with offering them a special timetable to facilitate their studies," said Rita Uhlig, the club's managing director, who believes that with the new signings the team should be able to stay in the 14-team first division next season and finish in 8th-10th place.

The team captain, Zalán Lang, is also studying at Széchenyi University, and he said that conscious professional work started in last year's strength training period, and that the goal was not only to get promoted, but also to prepare for the NB I. “This approach was reflected in the training work. From the first minute. From the first minute it was clear that we had a good chance of winning the title. That put us under pressure, of course, and there was also the danger that the opponents could usually play us without any stakes, which makes it easier for them to play. Fortunately, we still came out on top," he said. He added that, with a number of players in the team having never played in the national championship before, they are putting a lot of emphasis on physical preparation and doing a lot of extra work to be ready for next year.
