World Championship Silver in Shanghai: SZE Lecturer Mentors Győr Automotive Student to Success

Martin Albrecht, a student at Lukács Sándor Automotive and Mechanical Engineering Technical School in Győr, won a silver medal in Automobile Technology at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 World Championship. The young competitor was mentored by Péter Őri, lecturer at Széchenyi István University’s Audi Hungaria Faculty of Engineering

Often referred to as the Olympics of vocational skills, the WorldSkills World Championship took place in Shanghai between 22 and 27 September, bringing together nearly 1,400 young professionals from 68 countries to compete across 64 skills. The Hungarian delegation, coordinated by the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK), comprised 29 competitors participating in 25 skill categories. The prestigious event yielded a notable success for Győr, with Martin Albrecht, a student at Lukács Sándor Automotive and Mechanical Engineering Technical School in Győr, winning the silver medal in Automobile Technology.

"In the Automobile Technology competition, competitors must demonstrate a thorough understanding of how a vehicle operates as a whole. Among other tasks, they carry out engine assembly, mechanical measurements, diagnostics and repairs, interpret wiring diagrams, and demonstrate their expertise in using modern vehicle communication systems,” explained Péter Őri, lecturer at Széchenyi István University’s Audi Hungaria Faculty of Engineering and mentor to the competitor. He added that the outstanding performance in Shanghai was built on months of structured, deliberate preparation.

"In May, Martin secured first place ahead of competitors from six nations at an international preparatory tournament in Edmonton, Canada. In July, he continued his preparation in Shenzhen, China, where he received specialised training in the safe handling of high-voltage systems in electric and hybrid vehicles, before going on to win a competition featuring participants from 16 countries. In August, he trained in Dresden alongside German experts and competitors, focusing specifically on the practical tasks set for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026," his mentor explained.

Alongside Péter Őri, his former students – Zsolt Ölbei, Bence Tánczos, and László Nagy – also contributed to the mentoring process. Additionally, the Centre for Language and Culture at SZE provided tailored tuition in professional English for the competitor. Close collaboration with industrial and professional partners was equally vital to this success.

"Competitions of this nature are of paramount importance; they not only provide young talents with an opportunity to test their expertise on an international stage, but also catalyse development across the entire sector. The autotechnika.hu portal, operated by X-Meditor Ltd, has long served as a key repository of knowledge for the national automotive trade. Building on this expertise, we played a significant role in preparing the Hungarian competitor," said Imre Pintér-Péntek, owner and managing director of X-Meditor Ltd, who also holds the position of Vice-President of the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MKIK) and President of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He added that the organisational framework for Hungary’s participation in international skills competitions is provided by the MKIK.
