Law. Governance. Leadership. Széchenyi István University is the first to offer LLM program in Law and Governance in Europe. The program offers a unique experience and knowledge in the field of leadership, decision-making and governance. Participants will gain theoretical and practical knowledge in public law pertaining to governance; models of government; legislatives studies; international and supranational aspects of governance; case law of national and international courts; public management, NGOs and media-governance.

The primary aim is to enable legal experts to participate efficiently in different levels of legislation, decision-making processes, in both the public and private sector. The program provides additional insight into governmental decision-making and will also include communication activities, networking and cultural events in various Central European cities – to enhance leadership skills in a domestic or international environment.  Each opportunity is designed to prepare students for careers at the intersection of law and public management.


Structure of studies

The total number of credits needed to complete the programme is 60 credits. The programme is divided into five modules: Public Law Module (12 credits); Law and Government Module (12 credits); Law and Legislation (Parliaments) Module (8 credits); International and Supranational Governance Module (8 credits); Communication and Skills Module (12 credits); Thesis course (8 credits). 1 credit equals one ECTS credit, and 1 credit is defined as 25 student working hours


Language requirements

One of the following must be presented to show English-language proficiency: (a) TOEFL IBT test score of 66, or PBT score 513, (b) Cambridge First Certificate "B", (c) IELTS score of 5.5, (d) any official certificate equal to the above mentioned


Academic requirements

An authorized copy of a Master degree in Law from any higher education institution already completed that is relevant to your application


Programme educational objectives:

PEO#1: Graduates will excel in developing effective solutions to legal and governance challenges.

PEO#2: Students will perform effectively in decision making processes both in public and private sectors.

PEO#3: Students will demonstrate proficient communication and competency in core areas of legal negotiations and governance processes.

PEO#4: Students will stay updated with contemporary changes, engage in lifelong learning.

Student Outcomes:

  1. to identify and implement in practice the decision-making and enforcement tasks that are essential to improving the effectiveness of governance and its relationship with the private sector;
  2. further develop their knowledge of specific legal issues and develop a full understanding of the areas of public law relevant to the functioning of governance (e.g. electoral law, legislation, constitutional review, media law, public finance law, etc.).
  3. to participate actively and proactively in the bodies exercising legislative, governmental and administrative authority and supervision, and in the professional staff of these bodies, 
  4. a complex approach to the management of technical, economic and human resources,
  5. complex analysis, reasoning and planning based on a systems approach, 
  6. the application of integrated knowledge in the field of planning and evaluation, 
  7. carrying out status assessments, complex planning, management, leadership and execution of tasks.

Careers at the intersection of law and public management. LLM in L&G graduates can successfully contribute to decision-making processes, litigation and legal correspondence, at the preparation and execution phases, both in private and public sectors – central and local authorities, local governments, public and private enterprises, international organizations.

Positions that require the strategic ability, multifocal approach to solve higher level legal issues in any kind of legal fields (litigation, judiciary, public administration, corporate governance, etc.).
