SZE Partners with Wizz Air to Launch Aviation Postgraduate Programme in September

Széchenyi István University of Győr is launching an Aviation postgraduate programme in partnership with Wizz Air airline to prepare students for flying large passenger aircrafts. In addition to theoretical knowledge, students will gain a high level of practical skills, supported by state-of-the-art simulators and brand new digitally instrumented aircraft.

Air passenger transport is one of the sectors with a significant labour shortage across Europe. Recognising this, Széchenyi István University is launching an Aviation postgraduate programme from September, collaborating with renowned airlines such as Wizz Air, which has a fleet of 200 aircraft and flies over 500 routes.

Kata Némethné Farkas, Head of the University's Adult Education and Skills Development Centre, said: “You can apply for the programme with at least a Bachelor's degree in any field.” Those with a degree in engineering are qualified as aviation engineers, while those with other degrees are qualified as aviation specialists. Recruitment is subject to a Class 1 medical certificate at the medical examination. Candidates are not expected to have any prior knowledge of flying.

Successful candidates will be trained to drive large passenger aircrafts during the programme.

The three-semester English-language course is very intensive and, in addition to the theoretical parts, includes many practical elements - both simulator and real life flight exercises - and therefore requires a significant time and commitment from the students. The total tuition fee for this highly practical, equipment-intensive course is €95,000 (or approximately HUF 37 million), which may seem exorbitant at first glance, however the pilot's licence could pay for itself in a few years, as the graduates have a better chance of finding a job with Wizz Air thanks to the University's professional cooperation.

The theoretical education will take place in the University's renovated student housing at Budai street in Győr, where students can stay too, if they wish to. The building will also house a state-of-the-art aircraft simulator for continuous training. The flying lessons will be carried out at Győr-Pér airport in brand new digitally instrumented aircraft. The high quality of the practical training is complemented by a very thorough theoretical education.

"Students will become qualified pilots of large passenger aircraft if they successfully pass the theoretical and practical examinations in the accredited examination system of the aviation authority. We will provide them with all the knowledge and conditions to do this to the maximum. Our diploma and the CPL licence issued by the aviation authority will enable graduates to enter this highly sought-after and lucrative profession," said Dr Zsolt Kovács, Vice President for General and Educational Affairs at Széchenyi István University.
