Students of the Széchenyi István University have performed outstandingly in another world competition. Gergő Rumi returned home from the 2024 FISU World University Championships Canoe Sports with a gold and a silver medal, while Kincső Takács won a silver medal and a fifth place in the non-Olympic World Adult Championships.

The 2024 FISU World University Championships Canoe Sports were this year held in Montemor, Portugal, from 21-24 August, where the Hungarian delegation made a great effort to put Hungary at the top of the medal table. Gergő Rumi, a student of Recreation Management and Health Promotion at Széchenyi István University, contributed to the success with two medals. He won one gold and one silver medal for the Győr Water Sports Association, while Hungary topped the medal table with eight gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.

As a student of Széchenyi István University, Gergő Rumi won two medals at the World University Kayak Canoeing Championships.

Gergő Rumi first finished second in the 200m canoe race, then on the final day he was unbeaten in the 500m race. Rumi, who was already leading at the halfway mark, was in a tremendous battle with Great Britain's Thomas Lambert, but he held on to his first place, thus winning the gold medal.

"For me, the most important event of the year was the 2024 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in July, where we managed to win the silver medal in the quartet. However, we prepared to extend our form until the last big event of the season, the World University Championships. And we did, which resulted in another silver and a gold medal," said Rumi. The canoer added that being from Győr makes his preparation much easier, as he can study and compete in the same city. As a student of Széchenyi University, he believes he can seamlessly combine his sporting career with his studies at the University. "Next year, I would definitely like to qualify for elite world competitions and compete in the U23 World Championships in the singles," he said.

Kincső Takács, a BSc student in Tourism and Catering at our University, shortly after finishing 8th in the women's 200m canoe singles final at the Paris Olympics, represented Hungary once again at a major world competition. From 23 to 25 August, the 2024 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, which were not on the Olympic programme, were held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Kincső Takács competed with Jonathan Hajdu in the mixed canoe doubles and achieved the best Hungarian result in the sport so far. In the final, the Hungarian team competed in the eight-man event and immediately took the lead. In the end, the gold medal went to Alexei Korovaskov and Ekaterina Slyapnikova, who competed in neutral colours, while the Takács-Hajdu pair won the silver medal. The athlete from Győr competed in the women's canoe doubles 200m final with Dóra Horányi, where she finished fifth.

Kincső Takács, a student of Széchenyi István University, won a gold medal at the World Championships with Jonatán Hajdu.
