Brief description of the programme:
The aim of the MSc in Obstetric and Gynaecological Sonography programme at Széchenyi István University is to train professionals who perform independent screening and diagnostic obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations under medical supervision in the ultrasound diagnostic laboratories of health care institutions, as well as in any other health care provider, in the context of inpatient and outpatient specialised care. They will have the knowledge, skills and competences necessary for a successful career and to continue their studies at doctoral level.
Structure of studies
The course is practice-oriented.
The disciplines and specialisations leading to the qualification, from which the degree is built:
- applied health sciences (fundamentals of clinical genetics, fundamentals of ultrasound diagnostics, ultrasound anatomy, imaging diagnostic informatics and documentation)
- theoretical and clinical medicine (obstetrics-gynecology physiology and pathology, embryology)
- obstetric-gynaecological sonographic skills (general and vascular ultrasound diagnostics, obstetric ultrasound diagnostics, gynecological ultrasound diagnostics, foetal ultrasound diagnostics)
- optional professional skills (health professional communication, library skills, health law in obstetrics and gynaecology, health ethics)
- 60 credits of practical training is in parallel with the programme.
Language requirements
TOEFL 513 / IELTS 5.5 /oral examination, TOEFL IBT test score of 66 or any standardised international English language exam corresponding with Hungarian B2 at the Bachelors level and C1 at Masters level.
If there is no standardised English exam, the University relies on an online interview. Applicants not complying with language requirements must enrol in a preparatory language programme. After having completed the language course and passed the requisite final examination, if there are no professional reservations on the part of the Faculty, admission to the selected Bachelor's programme is automatic.

Completed and signed application form, copy of your passport, notarized copy of Bachelor’s degree relevant to the Master's studies, notarized copy of the Transcript of Records, notarized copy of your language certificate, recent photograph, Curriculum Vitae (resumé) in English, Academic Reference letter in English (Issued by your former academic institution/teacher).
A BSc healthcare professional (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) with a qualification and specialization in nursing, midwifery or other related disciplines. And also a specific motivational letter in English that must be based on our given questions about the chosen field.
Programme educational objectives:
The aim of the course is to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and competences necessary for a successful career as a qualified Obstetric and Gynaecological Sonographer, and to continue their studies in a doctoral programme, leading to the awarding of a scientific degree.
PEO#1: Graduates will be familiar with the professional guidelines, protocols, international standards and regulations for the performance of obstetric-gynaecological ultrasound diagnostics.
PEO#2: They are familiar with the theory and practice of ultrasound imaging, the technical background, basic equipment, methods of performance and diagnostic administration systems for performing ultrasound examinations.
PEO#3: They know the areas, methods, problem solving, client management techniques and their concepts. They perform their work in accordance with ethical standards. They have up-to-date knowledge of health law.
PEO#4: Graduate obstetric and gynaecological sonographers are open to new procedures, professional innovations, and the practical application of technical innovations and strive to continuously improve their practical skills in order to provide high quality care.
Student Outcomes:
The student outcomes (SO 1-7) of the degree programme includes the skills, knowledge and attitudes that guide the development of students and help them to obtain the qualification of a qualified sonographer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
1. Have a comprehensive knowledge of the female life cycle, the physiological and pathological functioning of the reproductive organs, fetal development and developmental abnormalities.
2. Have a broad knowledge of healthy foetal development, of the forms that can be examined in the first, second and third trimesters, of the abnormalities that can be detected by ultrasound in the embryonic and foetal periods, of the morphology and abnormalities of the foetus and its adnexa and of the pelvic organs
3. Have a comprehensive knowledge of two-, three- and four-dimensional, general and vascular ultrasound examinations and the technique and performance of Doppler ultrasound examinations.
4. Be able to measure and evaluate fetal biometry, determine the developmental rate of the fetus on the basis of the measured values, perform Doppler examination of uteroplacental and fetal blood flow and identify abnormal fetal anatomy.
5. Be able to independently assess the normal anatomy of the female pelvis, uterus and adnexa during gynecological ultrasound examinations, to detect developmental abnormalities and pathological processes, and to perform Doppler examination of the female pelvic organs.
6. Be able to differentiate abnormalities detected during examinations from the normal and refer them to the supervising physician, consult with him/her and prepare appropriate documentation.
7. Ability to communicate adequately in a professional manner in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, both in a peer and non-peer context.

Certified obstetric and gynaecological sonographers perform independent screening and diagnostic obstetric-gynaecological ultrasound examinations under medical supervision in the ultrasound diagnostic laboratories of health care institutions, in inpatient and outpatient specialised care, as well as in any other health care provider (including private practices). After obtaining the Master's degree, it is possible to continue to doctoral school and obtain a scientific degree.
