International Language Programme

Széchenyi István University offers international courses in English and German. (Programmes taught in German language will be indicated individually.)

FOUNDATIONAL (PREPARATORY) COURSES IN ENGLISH

As of September 1st, 2018, SZE is launching foundational courses in English. These intensive English courses are aimed at international students whose proficiency in English (academic writing, free conversation, appropriate articulation and pronunciation skills together with presentation skills) is below the expectations of academic achievement and progress. For example, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean students will greatly benefit from these foundational courses as their articulatory bases originating from their mother tongues are very different from those of most European languages (such as English, for example). These courses are taught mostly by native English speakers (Americans, British, Canadian) with special training in EFL and ESP.

A1. One semester (five months) intensive English preparatory course in small groups (8 to 10 people) with personal tutoring and task-specific supervision. During the course there is a strong emphasis on pronunciation practice and oral fluency tasks.

A2. One semester (five months) intensive Special English preparatory course in small groups (8-10 persons) with personal tutoring and discipline-specific supervising in chosen disciplines (e.g. marketing, management, engineering, construction, information technology). During the course, emphasis is laid on the development of conversational and public presentation competencies of each student.

The courses are organized by highly trained English teachers employed by the University and constitute an organic part of the overall educational programme. The University assists the students twith enrolment, visa applications and on-campus accommodation.

At the end of the Foundational Year (two semesters of intensive English studies) students are expected to sit for an exam in English testing both their English proficiency level and their professional (academic) knowledge.

Széchenyi István University continually strives to widen the scope of its international activities. To support this aim, the University founded the Centre of International Programmes (CIP), which under the direction of the Vice-Rector of Educational Affairs, provides a comprehensive framework for the administration of international academic affairs, including collaboration with partner institutions in the form of bi- and multilateral agreements, coordination of mobility programmes, the advertising and promotion of the 24 English-taught academic programmes as well as the major cultural and academic events organised within the University’s international community. CIP’s role naturally also encompasses all aspects of administrational support to the body of international students at the University.
